The koi is a Japanese fish. They are a popular fish for ponds, due to their appearance. Looking after koi is not a difficult task as is believed by many. They are kept in the garden pond and are very attractive. If appropriate care is taken then these fish live for many years. They can also grow quite long.

Below are some tips on maintaining your koi fish pond

Depth of the water
Koi fish must be kept in deep water. Deeper water protects your fish from animals. Deeper water also shields the fish during summer.

Provide enough space
Koi fish love swimming and need plenty of room to swim. Tiny ponds are not fit for koi.

Heat your pond in the cold season

Do not let your pond freeze. Koi fish are not too concerned by cold weather but keeping them warm is necessary or else they will not grow.

Provide shade
Plant water flora in the pond. This will provide a cooling effect and will also provide shade to the fish. Never expose them to direct sunlight.

Keep the birds away
There are many birds of prey that would eat your fish. Place them in such a manner so that you can cover them with a net if the need arises.

Following these simple tips will let your koi live longer and make your koi fish pond look all the more beautiful.
