Koi fish ponds look very attractive in gardens and maintaining beautiful fish can be quite rewarding. A well maintained koi fish pond not only earns praise but is also good for the fish. If the pond is well maintained, the fish can live up to ten years. However a koi fish pond requires some serious attention and maintenance.
The depth of the pond is extremely important. The depth should ideally be more than four feet in order to keep the fish safe from rodents, household cats and other animals. One thing that has to be noted is that smaller ponds are not ideal for koi, simply because fish breed and multiply.
As they grow they require more space therefore keep the pond big enough. The positioning of the fish pond should not be directly under the sun. While the cold water is not suitable for the survival of fish, hot water can be troublesome too. Therefore, the temperature should be warm and controlled.
A shade over the fish pond would be ideal as it can help in maintaining the changing temperatures apart from keeping flying birds at bay. Birds can end up eating the fish, therefore avoid bird feeding stands near the pond. Keep the fish pond clean and hygienic at all times so that the fish survive.
Once the koi fish pond is ready you can also accessorise it with pond pumps, filters, water heaters, sterlisers and water aerators.
