All over the world fish lovers have always been fascinated with the koi. The word koi comes from the Japanese language and means carp. This type of fish was found during the 18th century and that is when farmers began breeding this type of fish. The koi includes bright colour varieties and dull grey fish too. Keeping and breeding koi has become a hobby the world over and they are the most common pond fish you can find.

There is a huge variety of attractive koi that you can find today and these can live for decades. So if you are planning on getting a koi pond, there are a few things that you have to do.

Pond depth – Ensure that your pond is at least four feet deep so that these wonderful fish are protected from anything that might harm them. Deep koi ponds are also necessary to prevent the pond from overheating during the summer.

Size of the pond – A koi pond should be a big one. This is because koi are extremely active and love to swim. These fish can also grow up to about three feet in length. As time goes by, you may want to add more fish to the pond, so there should be adequate room.

Accessories for your koi pond – To keep your pond clean and healthy, it is important to have pond filters and pond pumps. These will keep the water in your pond fresh, clean and moving.
