Considerations before creating a Koi pond

Garden ponds such as Koi ponds can require a lot of maintenance and time. If you are unable or unwilling to invest the time in maintaining a Koi pond, then it makes little sense to expend the time and money in building one. Koi fish do make stunning ‘garden decorations’ but they are should be regarded as pets rather than mere garden decorations.

Just as you would make time to care for any other pet, Koi require regular attention and care. If you want your Koi fish to flourish, it is important to ensure that they inhabit a healthy environment in your Koi pond. Additionally, to enjoy seeing the Koi fish swim around, the water in the pond must always remain clear.

Here are some important things to remember before building a Koi pond:

• The larger the Koi pond is, the better it is. Ideally, Koi ponds should be built in excess of a 500 gallon capacity.

• The deeper the Koi pond is, the better it is. It is best to have a Koi pond that is at least 4 feet deep.

• Create the pond in a pleasing shape. You can choose any shape that is pleasing to your eye.

Koi can grow particularly large, and it is important to have a regular and proper feeding regime for them.
