Getting the right pond filter system for your garden pond can not be understated. All the inhabitants in your pond depend on this one item to keep them free from illness and disease. Your pond filter removes all the harmful pollutants in your pond thus creating the right environment for your fish and also keeping your pond looking visually attractive.

Most newer style pond filters have both mechanical and biological filtration systems and some pond filters also have inbuilt UV clarification which removes algae and hence makes the pond a cleaner environment for your fish. The Fish Mate Powerclenz Filter is one kind of pond filter system that works perfectly in any pond. The mechanical filtration system uses sponge pads to catch algal clumps and the biological filter uses SUPRA bio-media to introduce friendly bacteria into the pond thus removing fish pollutants.

Cleaning this type of pond filter couldn’t be easier. All you need to do is rotate the knob to ‘CLEAN’ and the pond sludge is discharged to waste.

It is really important to check your pond filter is working to the best of its ability. But, if you are in any doubt, installing a new filtration system isn’t too difficult and it won’t break the bank.

The modern uses of pond pumps and pond filters

In the past, it used to be much more difficult to effectively manage a garden pond. But with the new modern devices that are now available for the water gardener it is now easier to manage the pond environment and the problem of effective pond management can thus be solved.

We know that for any pond to flourish there must be a balanced eco-system which provides the right quantity of nutrients and oxygen to the pond in the right quantities so your fish can survive comfortably.

The best inventions in pond husbandry are undoubtedly the pond pump system, the biological pond filter system and the UV clarifier. The pond pump can be used in isolation from the other types of equipment or as an integral component as part of the filter system. A pond pump on its own will cause movement of water, either by creating a fountain or a waterfall. This will add oxygen to the pond just because of the water movement. But when a pond pump is added to a pond filtration system the pump will cause water to pass over or through the filter and thus the filter will be able to remove any harmful pollutants or waste products from the water. In addition, a UV clarifier can be used to manage algae growth and solve green pond syndrome.

By using these three items, the pond can be looked after more effectively and pond husbandry becomes more manageable.

Pressurised pond filters

You may be thinking about giving your pond an overhaul during the autumn months. This might include a general clean and tidy or replacing essential components like the pond filter or the pond pump.

If you have noticed that your pond filter is not performing as it should, maybe it is time to look at changing it. There are two main kinds of pond filter that you can buy for your pond – pressurised filters and box filters. If you are thinking about hiding the filter in a discreet location then you might want to look at the pressurised variety.

Pressurised filters can be hidden anywhere outside the pond and can even be partially buried so they can be hidden. The filter works by pumping water into it from the pond then after filtration pumping it back into the pond under pressure. Hence the many options of location. Most people use a pressurised filter because they don’t want an unsightly filter destroying the aesthetic appeal of the pond or because they don’t have room to fix a box filter close enough to the pond. Some types of pressurised pond filters even come with easy clean functionality so you can back flush the media to waste.

Why do I need a pond filter?

It can be easy to see why many people consider a pond filters sole function is to remove physical debris from the pond’s water. Most people think of a filter as a giant sieve that removes physical waste products. Whist it is the case that the filter does remove physical waste from the pond, the only waste that will be removed in this way will be the waste suspended in the water that passes through the filter via the pump. Most physical waste ands debris will just sink to the bottom of the pond and break down, polluting the water with damaging chemicals. And this is where the filter really comes into play.

The main reason you need a filter in the pond is to remove chemicals like ammonia caused by the fish and the break down of other waste products and uneaten fish food. The filter actually breaks down these chemicals using a bacterial culture. After the installation of a new filter system it usually takes around 5-6 weeks for the filter to clean your pond completely. And this is another reason why with a new pond you need to introduce fish slowly or after allowing your pond to acclimatise.

Algae and a balanced environment (Part 2)

In the last article we discussed that if your pond has too many nutrients than you may have a problem with the amount of algae in your pond. There are many options you have to deal with the problem, but all of which could be short term solutions unless you get to the root of the problem.

• If you use tap water to top up your pond level you could be adding too many nutrients into your pond environment. Try using collected rain water instead; it’s better for the environment and also better for your bank balance if you have a water meter fitted to your property.
• Avoid too much decaying material entering your pond by stopping leaves from trees falling into your pond and any marginal planting dropping leaves or flowers into your pond. This will decrease the level of nutrients that enter your pond.
• Try to introduce submerged plants into your pond, these will take up nutrients and compete with the algae for space.
• Try to reduce the amount of sunlight that your pond receives, a great way of doing this is by introducing water lilies or other pond plants that sit on the surface of your pond.
• The non-strand types of algae can be removed by a good pond filter, when UV lighting is also added this can control the algae making it easier to collect and remove.

Pond pumps, filtration, fountains and waterfalls

Moving water in and around your pond is a good thing to do. It adds extra oxygen to the water that would only normally only be oxygenated by plants and surface oxygen absorption. And a fountain can add a great visual element to the water feature.

A pond pump can be used to power a waterfall, a fountain or as part of your pond’s filtration system to remove harmful substances and chemicals. Whilst a pump may not be required for small ponds, if you want any sort of water movement a pump is essential.

The pump is best installed whist you are planning your pond design, especially is you are planning on different levels of ponds so you can move the water between them. If you are planning on using a pond pump for a water feature and also filtration then you may want to consider two different pumps. This will mean you can switch the feature off at night to save electricity and still have the filtration system running.

Pond pumps come in many sizes and you will be amazed at just how much water they are able to move. If used for filtration the should be able to completely filter all the pond water in around 90 minutes, whereas if the are used for a fountain they should be able to provide a stream of water that is more than just a trickle.
Most online pond suppliers and manufacturers offer advice and can help you choose the right sized pond pump for your pond.
