UVs, ultraviolet lights / lamps / clarifiers - a bit misleading but they all mean the same thing. UV pond lights sometimes get called sterilisers. There is a difference but it need not really concern you.
Why invest in a UV pond light? Simply to eradicate, or more importantly, avoid having green pea soup for water. The green water is an algae bloom which starts to appear early spring and throughout the summer months. Pond keepers who turn off the UV and filtration over winter must start the system back up around February. That way not only will the filter bacteria have a chance to re-colonise the water, but also the UV pond light will be an ongoing algae preventative against what is already there. In addition, this puts less strain on the filter (the greener the water is allowed to get before you apply a UV pond light, the more dead algae your filter unit must collect). Algae can be eliminated with chemicals, however this is an ongoing chore throughout the season to maintain a clear pond. The long term solution is to have a UV.
