 | | | | What to consider when choosing your pond liner.
When building a pond, you will need to line it with a pond liner to hold the water. Pond liners are available in a variety of materials and shapes from Aquatix-2u, we have a wide range to met your pond liner needs. To help you make an informed choice as to which sort of pond liner to use in your pond, we have put together this brief guide. Please remember that if at any time you should require further advice, we are only at the end of the phone: Aquatix-2u - 01621 893716.
Making your pond liner choice will depend on your designated budget, your pond design and the pond's location. When making these decisions you will need to ensure that your choice leaves you with a pond that is neither too large nor too small for its intended inhabitants. As a guide, 10 fish require a surface area of at least 1.8 m² (20 square feet). To allow and encourage your fish to multiply, make sure your pond is large enough to cope with the growth of the fish for several years to come.
Three grades of pond liner are available:
BUTYL is a long-lasting material that can be welded. This genuine 0.75mm Swedish rubber pond liner is highly elastic (up to 300% under extreme circumstances) allowing you to mould and shape the pond liner as the pond is filling, thereby eliminating most of the wrinkles.
EPALYN is very similar to BUTYL to the touch and to look at, also being 0.75mm thick. Yet under test is a better quality pond liner with its tear strength and tensile strength both substantially superior.
SUPER-FLEX is a heavy duty, very flexible, high quality pond liner material 0.5mm PVC. It is measurably thicker and tougher than most other PVC grades on offer in this mid range category.
Choosing your pond liner
Pond liners are one of the most cost effective and versatile forms of pond container. Advances in technology have enabled manufacturers to create pond liners with a greatly enhanced lifespan. Our BUTYL and EPALYN pond liners come with a lifetime guarantee (up to 100 square metres). These pond liners should give you many years of use.
We also recommend that you use a good quality underlay such as Prolene to protect your pond liner from potential puncture sources in the surrounding soil. Most importantly, Prolene pond liner is rot proof unlike old carpet and newspapers.
Plastic pond liners vs. Rubber pond liners: A word of warning about cheap plastic pond liners -
With the development of elastic, durable rubber, pond liners have become long lasting. However, low quality plastic pond liners are available to buy but these cannot offer the same degree of longevity as a rubber pond liner such as EPALYN. The cheaper variations are weaker and more susceptible to sunlight / UV damage as well as being liable to puncturing and stress holes from stretching. What might appear to be an inexpensive option in the first instance, is highly likely to be the most expensive and inconvenient option when it needs to be continually replaced. Also, do not be tempted to improvise using swimming pool liners or roofing materials as these are treated with chemicals which are toxic to pond life. Always use a good quality pond liner!
To help you to calculate the size of liner that you will require, we have created a "Pond liner calculator". All you need to do is enter the dimensions of your (proposed) pond and our calculator will tell you how much pond liner you will need. Just click here to calculate your pond liner size!
