 | | You need filtration because...
The reason your garden pond needs a pond filter is that most ponds are home to an unacceptably high concentration of fish. The fish are constantly producing ammonia and nitrate in the closed environment of your pond where there is nowhere for this fish-waste to escape to. The presence of this toxic waste is not always immediately obvious, your pond could look perfectly clear and still contain dangerous levels. You can test the levels using a home test kit. As a guide, your pond filter needs to be capable of filtering the contents of your pond every two hours to keep the water at a suitable level of purity. As your fish are always growing, it is a good idea to plan for the future - your larger future fish are likely to produce much higher amounts of waste than they do currently.
Types Pump Fed Filter Systems
There are two main types of filtration systems: Pump fed and Gravity fed. The difference between the two is that in a pump fed system the water is sucked from the pond and pumped to the filter. After filtration it spills back into the pond (possibly via a waterfall) thereby completing the cycle. In the pump fed system a submersible pump may be placed in the pond (near the bottom) to suck out water. One main advantage of a pump fed system is that the filter is mounted above ground and pond water level. This is very useful when floor space is unavailable or unsuitable. If a waterfall is required the outlet from the filter can supply the waterfall. Installation is less labour intensive as they do not need to be sunk into the ground and the pipework is simpler.
